Who this guide is for
This guide is for students in the United States considering an internship at Microsoft — from first-year students looking at its early-career programs to PhD, MBA and JD candidates. It covers the programs Microsoft publicly describes, what is documented about eligibility and timing, and how to prepare an application. Every claim is linked to an official Microsoft source at the end; where Microsoft does not publish a detail, we say so instead of guessing.
Program overview
| Program | Field | Location | Duration | Study stage | Application timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Explore Microsoft | Software development — computer science, computer engineering, IT, data science, electrical engineering, cybersecurity | United States | 12 weeks (summer) | First- and/or second-year college students | Not specified — check current listings |
| Discovery Program | Early-career engineering | Redmond, WA or Atlanta, GA | 4 weeks | Rising first-year college students | Not specified — check current listings |
| Advanced-degree internships | Varies by team and role | Varies by posting | Not specified | PhD, MBA or JD candidates | Not specified — check current listings |
Microsoft's early-career programs are unusually accessible: Explore and Discovery are built specifically for students in their first two years of college, before most applicants feel "ready." Requirements that belong to one specific vacancy are listed only in that vacancy's posting.
Eligibility
Microsoft publishes study-stage eligibility per program: Explore is for first- and/or second-year students interested in technical disciplines, and Discovery is for rising first-year students. Degree-specific requirements, graduation-year cutoffs and work-authorization terms are not specified on the program pages — read the qualifications section of the specific role before applying.
Recruiting timeline
Microsoft does not publish a common application season or deadline for its internship programs on the program pages cited below. Treat each posting's stated dates as the authority, and apply early in the fall for the following summer — that is the pattern across large tech employers, but it is not a Microsoft-published rule.
Pay and work arrangement
Microsoft does not state program-wide internship compensation or a standard work arrangement (on-site, hybrid or remote) on the cited program pages. Where an individual posting discloses pay or location expectations, those apply to that vacancy only.
Application and preparation
Applications go through the official Microsoft careers site. Microsoft does not publish a standard internship interview sequence on the cited program pages, so prepare for the general pattern of a technical screen followed by interviews — and read each posting for its stated process.
Preparation is on you, and it is where most applicants fall short. Before you apply, tailor your resume to the posting's exact keywords with the Resume Tailor, draft a role-specific letter with the Cover Letter Writer, and practice technical and behavioral questions in Interview Prep. You can also find recruiters at Microsoft and request a warm introduction before your application lands.
