About the role

Be Part of the Shape Family We are thinkers, believers, and doers. At Shape, we don’t see the norm as our limit—we see it as a launchpad. We challenge tradition, push boundaries, and create solutions others say can’t be done. Join us and help shape the future of engineering.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Our student engineering program offers hands-on experience across multiple disciplines in a dynamic manufacturing environment. Interns and co-ops gain exposure to real-world projects, technical challenges, and cross-functional collaboration—building a strong foundation for future careers.

INTERNSHIP TRACKS

TEST ENGINEERING INTERNS

  • Conduct low-speed crash testing (up to 15mph) and pedestrian impact

testing (up to 30mph)

  • Perform materials testing (tensile, hardness, microhardness) for

manufacturing and CAE modeling

  • Assist in fixture fabrication using welding, milling, turning, and laser

cutting—no prior experience required

  • Learn LabView programming for data acquisition and instrumentation setup
  • Support static and fatigue testing on automotive and furniture components
  • Participate in benchmarking and full dimensional/material analysis of

products like bumpers, door beams, and active grille shutters

PROCESS ENGINEERING INTERNS

  • Analyze and improve equipment design and processing windows
  • Document findings and create operator instructions
  • Get introduced to Six Sigma and the DMAIC problem-solving framework
  • Apply statistical analysis, including Design of Experiments (DoE)

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING INTERNS

  • Update electrical schematics and revise machine control systems
  • Design and implement PLC/operator interface programs using GE-Fanuc and

Allen-Bradley platforms

  • Lead troubleshooting and continuous improvement efforts on the shop floor
  • Create work instructions and integrate controls for process improvements
  • Design electrical schematics for high and low voltage systems using CAD

MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING INTERNS

  • Design tools and fixtures using AutoCAD or SolidWorks
  • Support continuous improvement and production troubleshooting
  • Create and revise operator instructions
  • Assist with asset management, safety audits, and plant layout planning

WELDING ENGINEERING INTERNS

  • Program and optimize Fanuc GMAW welding systems
  • Use Trumpf TruTops for offline programming and laser cutting operations
  • Improve dimensional capability and support capital/tooling procurement
  • Develop and document process parameters for welding operations

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT ENGINEERING INTERNS

  • Gain exposure to Shape’s Product Development processes, including SPMP,

enterProj, Plex, and Smartsheet systems

  • Learn the fundamentals of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and

drawing development

  • Work with Teamcenter and VisMockUp to manage and visualize product data
  • Assist in the creation and review of key engineering documents such

as DFMEA, DVP&R, and technical drawings

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support product design and process

development initiatives

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Apply engineering calculations to real-world problems
  • Manage cross-functional projects
  • Create technical documentation and present findings
  • Take on additional tasks as assigned by your supervisor

Qualifications

Education & Experience
